How to Make Your Own Harry Potter Wand

Gather up your materials, heat up your glue gun, and get crafting!

Wand Craft Materials:

All you need to make these easy DIY wands is chopsticks, paint, string, and a hot glue gun.
Chopsticks. Paint. String. Hot Glue.

We used chopsticks, paint, string, and a hot glue gun. That’s it!

DIY Wand Instructions:

Once you’ve gathered your materials, you are ready to start crafting!

Design Your Wand

Have an adult use the glue gun to create the wand shapes you desire. Experiment a little to find a design you like.

  • You can add globs of glue along the base of the chopstick to create a wand similar to the “immensely powerful and dangerous” elder wand.
  • You can wind string tightly around the bottom half of the chopstick in order to create a wand with a rough handle similar to Harry Potter’s wand.
  • You can wind string up in a spiral along the length of the chopstick to create a pretty vine-like effect similar to Hermione Granger’s wand.

Once the glue has dried, you are ready to paint your unique wand creations.

Apply a Base Coat

We liked using base colors of brown or black for our wands, and we were quite pleased with how it turned out.

Spray paint the entire wand in a single base color.

(At first, we painted each wand by hand using tiny paintbrushes. It took forever! Spray painting is much quicker and easier!)

You will be amazed at how realistic the wands look after just spraying them with a base coat.

These DIY Harry Potter wands are surprisingly easy to make.

Add Colorful Wand Details

Once the base coat was dry, then we used small paintbrushes to add small details to several of the wands. Great colors to use for detail work would include shades of brown, black, gray, tan or dark green. I think shiny metallic colors (especially gold or silver) could be really cool as well.

  • Our “elder wands” often featured a dark brown base coat with black knobby globs.
  • One of our Hermione-type wands featured a brown base with dark green vine-like spirals.
  • We made some brown wands with black handles.
  • We left some wands as a single solid color.
  • We created a sleek black wand with dark gray detailing.

They all turned out surprisingly impressive.

Spellbindingly Great for Gifts and Play

I am not a naturally crafty person, and yet, these wands turned out beautifully. Even my teenage son commented on how well they turned out. (You know the wands turned out great if a teen felt compelled to compliment it. Right?)

These DIY wands are not just a fun craft project. They are also fun to play with, and they make fantastic gifts!

A Magical Gift

We happened to make these wands around Valentine’s Day so we sent them out to our friends and family in time for the holiday. I sure hope they like them!!

We had intended to create our own little valentine cards to go with the wands – cards that said things like “We hope you have a magical Valentine’s Day” – but then I discovered a free printable online that went well with our DIY wand creations. These printable “I think you are ‘wand’-erful” valentines worked perfectly so we just used those instead.

We have also gave out these adorable miniature wands as party favors for a Harry Potter themed party. It was a big hit with all of our guests – adults and children.

Additionally, my nine-year-old son added a wand to a gift he was giving a friend. The friend (who is headed to Universal Orlando and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in a couple of months) was delighted with his new magic wand.

Magically Fun Play

And, oh my word, we have all been having such a fun time playing with our new magic wands. The children (and sometimes myself) run around the house pointing their wands and shouting out spells.

All throughout my home, you can hear exclamations like expelliarmus, alohomara, wingardium leviosa and, of course, expecto patronum.

A quick online search of “Harry Potter Spells” allowed us to expand our knowledge of spells making our play even more fun!

    1. These could make excellent prop wands for a play! Especially if you used the 15-inch chopsticks used for cooking (instead of the short chopsticks used for eating). What a great idea! Maybe you should consider Harry Potter and the Cursed Child for your next theatrical performance.

  1. Awesome sounds like a lot of fun!!! I love playing with wands and I found this article looking for DIY wands to make some time soon. You are really awesome for sharing this article.

  2. What a wonderful DIY project for our kids & Grandkids! We only have seven interactive wands and five of the heavy/ “real feeling” wands which were offered originally way back when Harry Potter first came to Florida. (They were a less expensive alternative at the time.) While our grandkids are still a bit too small to unleash on the family with with something that may turn their siblings/cousins into Cyclops 😉, it’s going to be a fun craft to share with others! We just found your site and love your hints, helps, how-to as and humour!
