Who else loves labyrinths? Did you know that there are several labyrinths in Michigan? Here is a list of five labyrinths (including a couple of lavender labyrinths) that I’ve run across recently while exploring this beautiful state!
Soooo, I’ve been a little obsessed with labyrinths ever since I visited the utopian community of New Harmony (home of two beautiful labyrinths) in Indiana. Since then, I have been discovering labyrinths all across the country during my travels.
Today, I would like to share five labyrinths that I have discovered right here in my home state including two lavender labyrinths in Michigan.

What is a Labyrinth?
But first, let’s clarify a few things. This article is not talking about mazes in Michigan. Instead, it is spotlighting labyrinths. Let me tell you what the difference is.
A labyrinth is a long winding singular path. One cannot get lost within a labyrinth as there is only one path to follow. This long serpentine path is meant to encourage contemplation, spirituality and/or meditation.
On the other hand, a maze is an interconnecting network of multiple paths. It is a puzzle to find your way.
“You enter a maze to lose yourself and a labyrinth to find yourself.” – Walking a Sacred Path by Dr. Lauren Artress
By the way, not all labyrinths are hedge paths. A labyrinth path can be defined by neatly trimmed hedges or by walls or even just lines marked upon the ground.
Find Zen in a Michigan Labyrinth
Whether you are seeking inner peace or just generally intrigued, here are five Michigan labyrinths I’ve run across that you may want to visit.
Cherry Point Farm and Market Lavender Labyrinth
Add a visit to the Lavender Labyrinth at Cherry Point Farm and Market to your Michigan Summer Bucket List! This lavender labyrinth in Michigan is amazing!
This labyrinth consists of a spiraling path made up of lavender plants and mounded earth. In the center of this labyrinth is a geometrically-shaped herb garden with stone border walls and a large circle of arbor posts.
There is no charge to wander the labyrinths and explore the impressive herb garden. Open seasonally, Cherry Point Farm is located at 9600 W. Buchanan Road in Shelby.
BONUS TIP: Stop in to the market area at Cherry Point Farm for farm-fresh fruits and veggies as well as yummy baked treats!
Lavender Hill Farm Labyrinth
Lavender Hill Farm in Boyne City is a beautiful place to explore. We were especially pleased to discover a small labyrinth with paths lined with lavender plants during our visit.
Lavender Hill Farm is located at 7354 Horton Bay Road N in Boyne City, Michigan. Open seasonally, admission is free. However, we highly recommend paying the very small fee to take the 30-minute golf cart tour.
BONUS TIP: Splurge a little during your visit! Treat yourself to a cold lavender soda and some lavender cookies from the gift shop.
Petoskey Community Labyrinth
While visiting Northern Michigan, stop by the Petoskey District Library to visit the Petoskey Community Labyrinth at the library’s outdoor courtyard. The labyrinth is a traditional design created from gray and red paver bricks along the ground.
The Petoskey Community Labyrinth can be found on the grounds of the library located at 500 E. Mitchell Street in Petoskey. Access to this outdoor labyrinth is free.

Leila Arboretum Peace Labyrinth
The Peace Labyrinth in Leila Arboretum features a winding path within a beautiful flower garden. It is difficult to not feel at peace with nature as you slowly follow this circular path lined with perennial blooms.
Admission to Leila Arboretum (including the Peace Labyrinth) is free and open daily. It is located at 928 West Michigan Avenue in Battle Creek.
BONUS TIP: While you are at Leila Arboretum, be sure to check out the Fantasy Forest and the Kaleidoscope Gardens.
Castle Farms Body and Spirit Labyrinth
During a visit to Castle Farms in Charlevoix several years ago, we were delighted to stumble across a unique labyrinth amidst the royal sights and grounds of this Northern Michigan castle. As you followed the colorful path of the Body and Spirit Labyrinth, you would come across words occasionally. Each word was intended to encourage you to think about your own health and self wellness.
I know that Castle Farms has undergone various renovations over the years since our visit, and I often find myself wondering if the labyrinth is still there. If you visit there, let me know if you see it! (During your visit, be sure to also check out the amazing train display, Norm the Dragon, the oversized chess boards, the lovely gardens and more!)
Castle Farms is located at 5052 M-66 in Charlevoix. Open most days, there is an admission charge.
