Here’s what our family is reading

For me, I have been staying true to my favorite genres (historical fiction and memoirs) lately. Here are my latest favorites:

The Lost Castle by Kristy Cambron

Set mostly in France’s Loire Valley, this book spans three different time periods (the French Revolution, World War II, and present day), and the tales all interweave with one another in such a neat way. In many ways, the storylines reminded me of some of my favorite Kate Morton books – beautiful scenery, interesting historical storylines, and strong female characters. I look forward to reading more books by Kristy Cambron.

This Is the Story of a Happy Marriage by Ann Patchett

I was so delighted by this collection of essays that I am writing a blog post specifically about my reading experience. Watch for that blog post to be published later this month!

Behind My Eyes by Jessica Holt

I enjoyed this debut novel about the intertwining lives of two women who are so different from one another yet so much alike. It was a fast and engaging read. If Jessica Holt writes another novel, I will definitely be reading it!

Good news for my local friends! The Kent District Library was gracious enough to specially purchase this book at my request. If you would like to read it, you can simply check it out from our local library system. Thanks, KDL!

My husband tends to read news articles and non-fiction. Here is the book that he has been reading lately:

The Unoffical Guide to Universal Orlando 2018 by Seth Kubersky

Guess where we are headed for vacation later this year?? My husband is an awesome planner and loves to read non-fiction. So I picked up this useful resource from the library, and my husband has been gleaning all sorts of helpful information from it. This just may be one of our best trips ever!

My teen likes the action of science fiction and dystopian novels. Currently, he is still working his way through the Harry Potter series.

Harry Potter series by JK Rowling

Last Fall, our entire family started reading the Harry Potter series together.  As the books got longer and longer, the little kids and I have stopped reading the books aloud. Now, we all watch the movies together as the teen finishes reading them. We also intend to listen to Harry Potter audio books during our upcoming family road trips.

My 3rd grader loves graphic novels. I am especially pleased with some of his latest picks because they feature strong female main characters. The feminist in me thinks it is great that he doesn’t even seem to notice the gender of the main characters solving the mysteries or saving humankind. Here are a few of his latest favorite reads.

HiLo book series

HiLo is an exciting series about a robot boy from outer space who crashes to Earth and befriends a couple of children. Together, HiLo and his friends rescue each other from various disasters, travel through portals to other dimensions, and save other worlds. It’s a fun, action-packed series with a lot of humor.

Lumberjanes series

Friendship to the max! Five diverse young women embrace each other’s differences as they solve mysteries and defeat mythical creatures together – all while earning cleverly named scouting badges. This book series features themes of friendship, teamwork, diversity, creativity and acceptance.

Zita the Spacegirl series

Zita is lost in space and trying to find her way back home to Earth. Along the way, she makes new friends and faces off with monsters.

My kindergartner loves to sing, and lately, she has been choosing books featured in Emily Arrow’s songs. Here are a few of her favorite books.

Claymates by Dev Petty

Hear Emily Arrow’s Claymates song.

The Dot by Peter H Reynolds

Hear Emily Arrow’s The Dot song.

Are We There, Yeti? by Ashlyn Anstee

Hear Emily Arrow’s Are We There, Yeti? song.

  1. Great list! Certainly makes me wish I had more time to read! I need to see if my kiddo would be interested in Zita!! Together we are reading A Wrinkle in a Time.

  2. I wish I had more time for reading! I did just finish another Nicholas Sparks novel, A Walk to Remember. I’m a sucker for romance novels and love his work. My kids are reading voraciously for their school’s March is Reading Month contest. M loves sci-fi and fantasy novels (Harry Potter, Fablehaven, etc.) and L is reading the Cupcake Diaries series.

  3. We have an 8 year old cousin who doesn’t love to read (though his mom would like him to), but I’ve been wondering about graphic novels for him. I’ll bet he’d love the HiLo books. Thank you for the recommendation!
