Rainy Days

I love rainy days – always have and always will! I loved sloshing through puddles while walking home from school in my elementary days. Is there anything more satisfying than making a giant splash?

Some of my earliest memories involve playing with my brothers on our small covered porch on rainy days.  We would spin and jump and whoop and holler in our own variation of a tribal dance.  We called it our rain dance.  If the raindrops began to lessen, we whooped and danced more fervently.  And if the rain came down harder, we hooted in celebration because we knew that was the direct result of our dancing.

In high school, an English teacher once explained to my class that rain in a story often symbolized a fresh start as if the old stuff was being washed away in order to make room for a new beginning. I remember thinking “Of course! It’s no wonder I have always been enchanted with the rain!”

As an adult, I am still in love with a good rainfall, and I am raising a new generation of rain lovers. I share my love for wet weather by taking my little ones on “rain walks.” We don our boots and raincoats, pull out the umbrellas, and wander out into the rain in search of some good puddles.

It has been raining here for four days now.  One of those days, the rain paused for a short while, and the sun came out. All the foliage throughout our neighborhood was beaded with water droplets which glistened.  Everything looked shiny and new as it sparkled in the sunlight.  My teacher was right; the rain does turn everything new again.

Our pine trees glistened with water drops as the sun made a brief-but-bright appearance between rain storms this morning.

Oh, how I love a good rainfall! Happy splashing!

  1. This is why I like springtime so much. It represents all things fresh, new and beautiful. Rain is a big part of it and sunshine afterward is the crowning touch.

  2. Love the sounds of rain just outside my window. And you know what goes best with it? – some warm tea and bread toast… sometimes with an egg on top! 🙂
