Why Mom Is Tired

Husband’s alarm. Snooze.

Alarm again. Stretch. Get out of bed.

Seek caffeine. Drink.

Check emails. Check notifications.

My turn for the shower.

Wash, shampoo, rinse… think.

Dry off. Get dressed.

Husband. Goodbye Kiss.

“Have a good day at work.”

Brush hair. Brush teeth. Floss. Rinse.

Glance in mirror. Sigh.

“Do I have time to curl my hair? A little mascara?”

Wake children. Set out breakfast bowls.

Listen to children chatter.

Brush crumbs from table. Put away forgotten cereal box.

“Brush your teeth. Brush them good.”

First round of Zoom classes.

Sweep under table. Wash dishes.

Supervise math homework.

Daughter. Break time. “Will you push me on the swings?”

Push higher. Higher.

Next round of Zoom classes.

Start load of laundry. Wipe down bathroom sink.

Son. Break time. “Can we play video games until lunch?”

Stomach grumbles. Oops. Forgot Breakfast. Eat banana.

Cook kids’ lunches. Cook my lunch.

Eat and read.

Move laundry to dryer. Start another load.

Supervise remaining schoolwork.

Kids. “Can we play video games?”

“Again?” Sigh. “Do your chores first.”

Scroll Twitter. Return calls. Return emails.

More laundry.

Cook dinner. Set table.

Kiss husband hello. “How was work?”

Eat. Listen to children chatter.

Clear dishes. Start dishwasher.

Check emails. Check notifications.

Evening walk through neighborhood.

Fold laundry. “Come take care of your stacks of laundry.”

Tuck kids in. Bedtime snuggles.

Fall into sofa. Scroll Twitter. Three episodes of TV.

Brush hair. Brush teeth. Floss. Rinse.

More bedtime snuggles.

Phones off. Doors locked. Lights off. Climb into bed.

Eyes close. Eyes pop back open.

Think, think, think.

Get up. Make to do list for tomorrow.

Back to bed.

Drift off to sleep.

Tap, tap. Hot breath in my ear.

Son. “Mom, my tummy hurts.”

Eyes fly open. Jump out of bed.

Rush son to bathroom. Just in time!

Thermometer. 99.6 degrees. Hmmm.

Find puke bucket. Tuck kid and bucket into bed.

Lie awake. Think, worry, listen.

Get up. Google symptoms. Yawn.

Back to bed. Lie awake.

Think, worry, listen.

Drift off to sleep.

Husband’s alarm…
